Scrap Car Prices
Scrap car prices
Chances are you’ve been hunting around visiting various websites to find out “how much is my scrap car worth?”. When it comes to scrapping your car, you want to be confident you’ve got the best price before you confirm and book your car in for collection.
Factors that influence scrap car prices
We’ve put together this handy guide to help you understand the factors that influence scrap car prices, to help ensure that you get the best price for scrapping your car. Some of these factors you’ll be able to control, and unfortunately others you can’t.
Scrap metal market
This first factor is unfortunately out of your hands, but nonetheless has a significant influence upon how much your scrap car is worth.
Global metal markets have a reputation for being notoriously fast-moving, with prices for steel, aluminium and copper – all used in vehicle manufacturing – changing daily. There are several regions around the world which heavily influence scrap metal prices, including China, USA, Turkey, Europe and India. The surges in demand versus supply (and vice versa) in any one or more of these regions, can mean a constantly changing scrap metal price.
We wouldn’t advise getting caught up too much on watching the metal markets and for most it isn’t something to worry about. Other influences are listed below and it’s important to understand how they can change the price of your scrap car.
Size and weight of your scrap car or van
These factors, as you can imagine, are kind of obvious. Typically, the more your car or van weighs (tonnage-weight), the more money a scrap dealer will want to pay for it. Therefore, if you’re looking to scrap a Ford Transit, you can expect to be paid more than you would for a Vauxhall Corsa, purely because of the weight of the scrap metal.
Parts have been removed
To maximise the value of your scrap car we recommend that you leave it intact, no matter how great the urge is to remove parts. Scrap car dealers will price your car based upon it being complete, so if you remove small parts or major components such as the engine or catalytic converter, you can expect to see the price reduced.
If you remove certain parts, such as the wheels or battery, it will make collecting your scrap car more difficult. This may incur additional costs, or in a worst-case scenario prevent your car from being collected at all!

Why ban paying for scrap cars in cash?
Before the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 was introduced it was possible for scrap dealers to pay cash for scrap cars, with no legal obligation to obtain ID from the seller or keep accurate records. As you can imagine this made it easy for criminals to go undetected whilst selling stolen metal.
This legislation has been put in place to protect you as a vehicle owner, and also to protect our industry and drive down metal theft, so we’re fully behind it! Don’t sell your car for cash. If a rogue scrap dealer is willing to flout the law regarding cash payment, what’s to say they will dispose of your vehicle in a legal manner.
